21st Century Community Learning Centers Program

Washington County School District has been awarded the 21st Century Rural Expansion Grant in the amount of $500,000 annually for four years. This funding supports high-quality after-school and summer academic and enrichment programs for students in grades 3rd through 8th during the 2026-2027 school year.

Purpose of the 21st Century Rural Expansion Grant

The purpose of the 21st Century Rural Expansion Grant is to support the following initiatives:

  • Help students, particularly those who attend low-performing schools, meet the challenging State academic standards.
  • Offer students a broad array of additional services, programs, and activities during non-school hours, including youth development activities, service learning, nutrition and health education, drug and violence prevention programs, counseling, arts, music, physical fitness and wellness programs, technology education, financial literacy, environmental literacy, mathematics, science, career and technical programs, and other activities designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program.
  • Offer families of students served by community learning centers opportunities for active and meaningful engagement in their children’s education, including opportunities for literacy and related educational development.

Dates: June 8 – July 16, 2026 Hours: 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM (Monday – Friday)

Afterschool Program

Begins September 15th at Kate M. Smith Elementary and Vernon Elementary for grades 3rd – 8th. Activities include academic tutoring in math, science, and reading, plus enrichment such as music education, reader’s theatre, STEM, personal enrichment, martial arts, Spanish, sign language, chess, culinary, and dance. Transportation and daily snack provided.

Target Schools: Kate M. Smith Elementary, Vernon Elementary, Roulhac Middle, Vernon Middle (grades 3–8)
